So, lets continue on my Bali food notes before I forgot. After a hearty breakfast at Warung Nasi Ayam Kedewatan Bu Mardika, I went to Ubud art market to walk around and burn some calories. After going around there for nearly two hours, I went to Ibu Rai rest & bar at Monkey Forest road for some light lunch. The place has a very nice ambience. It has a Balinese design with exposed roofing, some Balinese painting on the wall and a small vase of orchid on every table. I instantly love this place. It’s a perfect stop for a hot day.

Ibu Rai - one of the first warungs visited by westerners in Ubud. My mom recalls sitting with Ibu Rai in 1975 on Monkey Forest Road when it was a dirt path and there was no electricity in Ubud. Ibu Rai had a little cart-style warung where she served 'Black Bean Soup' with fried onions and chiles tossed in. She and my Dad would sit and pick up Indonesian and Balinese with the beautiful Ibu Rai for 100 rps. While Ibu Rai has passed, her heart and soul live on through her Grandson. He has expanded the menu and every day drives to Sanur to pick up fresh seafood for the day. Whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner, Ibu Rai's will deliver mouth watering food with an amazing vibe. Try the Tom Yum soup, with chicken avocado Bali salad and wash it down with a fresh mojito. Ibu Rai's is a must in Ubud.

IBU RAI
Although this restaurant has been around for a long time, the cuisine has changed over the years, and today dining at Ibu Rai is full of surprises, with dishes that blend Asian, European and Pacific Rim flavours. On the main menu, try the spicy Thai beef coconut salad or a delicious Balinese chicken avocado salad. Also check the blackboard for specials such as plump honey and ginger glazed prawns sautéed with garlic. Main courses like this cost around £4. Although it is on the busy Monkey Forest Road, the restaurant is set back and the tranquil open dining room is surrounded by plants, flowers, antiques and stone statues.

Ibu Rai Bar & Restaurant
Ibu Rai Bar & Restaurant was only a small warung (food stall) on Monkey Forest Road back in the 1960s and was mostly frequented by travellers who came by to taste Ibu Rai’s delicious, cheap, healthy food. Years later, this tiny food stall has a special place in every guide book as one of the most recommended places to get a good quality meal at a very reasonable price and has therefore become a favourite among tourists.
In 1986, Ibu Rai’s son Dewa Gede opened a restaurant near the football field named ‘Ibu Rai Restaurant’. Ibu Rai Restaurant still adheres to the same principles held since the opening of the original venue in the 1960s: only use the freshest and the healthiest ingredients with no preservatives added to create tasty and nutritious food for each customer. Today, the menu has been extended from serving only Balinese food to other Indonesian cuisine and favourite International dishes.

Food prepared with love at Ibu Rai Restaurant

Ibu Rai Restaurant is located on Jalan Monkey Forest Ubud near the big football field. In the evenings the restaurant is charmingly lit and it is almost always packed with people...
So finally, we decided to have dinner here too. I'm glad we did, because it was a very surprising treat.
As soon as we opened the menu we immediately saw a picture of a beautiful old lady and we started to read her story.
